Luke Burrage - International Juggler and Entertainer
Luke works as a professional juggler. Below is what is printed about him in the daily newspapers when he works on cruise ships. Unfortunately it doesn't tell you much about Luke as a reader and reviewer of science fiction... but it will do for now.
Luke Burrage learnt how to juggle 3 balls at the age of 10. Luke always had a passion for being on stage, so studied performing arts full time at college for two years, then moved on to university, earning a degree in music production in 2001. He moved into the world of television, first as a sound mixer, then as a producer and editor.
Meanwhile, juggling had become a passion for Luke. After attending his first large juggling convention in 2000 (yes, they do exist) he was inspired to do two things: the first was to break a juggling world record, the second was to perform at the largest juggling events himself.
In 2002, Luke and fellow juggler Ben Beever broke the world record for most objects juggled between two people, a record that still stands at 18 balls. The following year, Luke equaled the record for most balls juggled by a solo juggler, becoming the 4th person to ever successfully juggle 12 balls.
Luke also started making a name for himself as a creative and entertaining juggler. He tapped into in his academic and professional background to create a unique style of performance, combining juggling with spoken word, specially written music, video projection, performance painting, shadow theatre, physical comedy and other multimedia ideas.
His second goal was realized when he won the International Jugglers' Association Peoples' Choice Award of 2004. He also headlined the main stage at the European Juggling Convention that same year, performing for over 4,000 other jugglers.
Since then, Luke has been a full time professional juggler, taking his show to over 25 countries around the world. He now splits his time between juggling on the German varieté scene and entertaining at sea. He has been the headline performer on many ships and cruise lines, including Cunard's QE2 and QM2. In 2007, while on an Orient Lines cruise, he even did a small show on the Antarctic mainland, taking the number of continents he has performed on to 6.
Luke spends much of his spare time teaching and coaching other jugglers, producing the only podcast about juggling and writing features for Kaskade, the European juggling magazine. Luke's proudest achievement so far was founding and organizing the British Young Juggler of the Year competition, which since 2005 has been inspiring a new generation of jugglers to become performers at a professional level.
