Luke, it seems your views on Catholicism have made you unable to appreciate the irony in Walter Miller's writing. Miller is criticizing the Church in showing the abbot's pre-occupation with Leibowitz's canonization and the Church's focus on its relics. Your criticism seems to be that the characters don't agree with your (and I would argue, Miller's) views.
